Negative-energy contributions to transition amplitudes in heliumlike ions

چکیده
We derive the leading term in an aZ expansion for the negative-energy ~virtual electron-positron pair! contributions to the transition amplitudes of heliumlike ions. The resulting expressions allow us to perform a general analysis of the negative-energy contributions to electricand magnetic-multipole transition amplitudes. We observe a strong dependence on the choice of the zeroth-order Hamiltonian, which defines the negativeenergy spectrum. We show that for transitions between states with different values of total spin, the negativeenergy contributions calculated in a Coulomb basis vanish in the leading order while they remain finite in a Hartree basis. The ratio of negative-energy contributions to the total transition amplitudes for some of nonrelativistically forbidden transitions is shown to be of order 1/Z . In the particular case of the magnetic-dipole transition 3 S1→2 S1 , we demonstrate that the neglect of negative-energy contributions, in an otherwise exact no-pair calculation, would lead one to underestimate the decay rate in helium by a factor of 1.5 in calculations using a Hartree basis and by a factor of 2.9 using a Coulomb basis. Finally, we tabulate revised values of the line strength S for the magnetic-quadrupole (M 2) transition 2 P2→1 S0 . These values include negative-energy contributions from higher partial waves, which were neglected in our previous calculations. @S1050-2947~98!03512-4#

Relativistic Calculations of Transition Amplitudes in the Helium Isoelectronic Sequence
Exact relativistic wave functions for n=1 and n=2 states of heliumlike ions are used to calculate single-photon transition amplitudes for 2 P1 → 1 S0, 2 P0,1,2 → 2 S1, 2 S1 → 1 S0, 2 P1 → 2 S1 and 2 P1,2 → 1 S0. Particular attention is given to the role of negative-energy states in bringing length and velocity forms into agreement, and related quantum electrodynamics issues. This is a reprinted...
متن کاملTwo-electron self-energy contribution to the ground state energy of heliumlike ions
The two-electron self-energy contribution to the ground state energy of heliumlike ions is calculated both for a point nucleus and an extended nucleus in a wide interval of Z. All the two-electron contributions are compiled to obtain most accurate values for the two-electron part of the ground state energy of heliumlike ions in the range Z = 20 − 100. The theoretical value of the ground state e...

We report a new test of quantum electrodynamics (QED) for the w (1s2p(1)P(1)→1s(2)(1)S(0)) x-ray resonance line transition energy in heliumlike titanium. This measurement is one of few sensitive to two-electron QED contributions. Systematic errors such as Doppler shifts are minimized in our experiment by trapping and stripping Ti atoms in an electron beam ion trap and by applying absolute wavel...
متن کاملA high-resolution transmission-type x-ray spectrometer designed for observation of the Ka transitions of highly charged high-Z ions
High-resolution reflection-type crystal spectrometers have been used for x-ray energies up to 13 keV, e.g., the K-shell radiation of heliumlike Kr. In order to extend crystal spectrometer measurements to higher energy x rays from higher-Z elements, we employ the crystal in transmission. The geometry we use is known as DuMond geometry. Using such a transmission-type crystal x-ray spectrometer, w...

The influence of negative-energy states (NES) on forbidden magnetic-dipole ns1 2 2 n 1 1 s1 2 transitions in alkali-metal atoms is investigated. We find that the NES contributions are significant in almost all cases and, for rubidium, reduce the transition rate by a factor of 8. We tabulate magnetic-dipole M1 transition amplitudes for the alkalis. Our M1 value for cesium, where accurate measure...
